The One About Fury

March 28, 2014
By: William Supko

You may or may not have heard the buzz about Fury 325 officially opening at Carowinds today.  The ride is so big that it runs through 2 states! Just in case you've missed the announcement, building, millions of social media posts and media day posts we'll catch you up real quick on the stats.

Height: 325 Ft.
Speed: Approximately 95 MPH
Angle of Decent: 81 degrees
Track Length: 6,602 Ft
Time: Approximately 3 minutes and 25 Seconds
Trains: 3 cars, 4 riders per row, 8 rows per train for a total of 32 riders per train
Designer: Bolliger & Mabillard

Fury 325's first drop and AMAZING airtime hill.

Fury 325 will be one of 14 roller coasters operating at Carowinds on opening day of the 41st season.  The ride will be considered the tallest and fastest Giga Coaster (roller coaster between 300 and 400 feet).  The previous record holder for this title is Steel Dragon 2000, a 318 foot tall roller coaster operated at Nagashima Spa Land in Japan.  Millenium Force at Cedar Point in Sandusky Ohio was the tallest giga coaster in America prior to Fury's opening.

The South Carolina turn around.  Just one of the many crazy good twists and turns on this ride.

Fury is Bollinger and Mabillard's 96th coaster.  This ride with it's white supports and teal and lime green track took over 2 years to plan and build.  The ride features an approximately 63 second ride on a conventional lift chain.  This is the tallest chain lift hill in the world.  Once riders hit 95 miles per hour at the bottom of the first drop the ride then goes through a series of high banked twist and turns, an underground dive and three unbelievably long airtime hills before hitting the final brake run.

A great looking front entrance
While Fury officially opens to the public on Saturday, March 28 the park held it's media day on Wednesday, March 25 and a special season pass preview night on Friday, March 27.  The first riders on trains leaving the station on Wednesday won the opportunity to do so through a special auction on the Carowinds website.  All money raised from the auction went to the Cam Newton Foundation.  The Cam Newton Foundation is committed to enhancing the lives of young people by addressing their socioeconomic, educational, physical and emotional needs.

In addition to adding a roller coaster that buzzes through the area between the park and parking lot Carowinds has updated the parking lot and entrance area.  There are some great views of the coaster going over (and under) you.  This is the second Cedar Fair park to update their entrance gate.  Cedar Point updated their entrance gate when they added GateKeeper in 2013.

SlingShot, an additional charge catapulte ride has also been added to the ride line up at Carowinds.  The ride will shoot riders nearly 300 feet into the air at approximately 60 miles per hour and pause for a few moments of weightlessness before plummeting riders back to the ground.

There are even more amazing things coming to Carowinds in 2015.  There are 45 new menu items coming to food locations throughout the park.  The smell of those famous North and South Carolina style BBQs is sure to get the tummy growling.  You can enjoy some brand new entertainment once you finish your meal.

Hopefully you get a chance to stop by and check out Fury 325 for yourself.  The media and coaster world have been buzzing since the ride was announced.  The ride is power packed with both curvy and airtime goodness.  We'll leave you with a few random facts.  Hope you enjoyed the read, now go enjoy the ride!

The ride took 3,400 gallons of paint/primer

The ride takes up 8.4 acres of land.

400 trucks were needed to haul in track pieces.

There are 192 track pieces.
